After the 2008 legislative session, Representative Ahlers went beyond his legislative responsibilities by taking time to educate parents of children with disabilities on accessing the legislative process, and attending disability-related functions and training. Basically, if he was asked, he said yes if it related to a children's issue.

Moreover, Dan Ahlers is also one of the most selfless persons I've ever met. He will make the time for the needs of others. It does not make a difference where he is at or how busy he may be, or if his agenda is jam-packed for the day, he will find the time. He takes the time to listen. He takes the time to ensure that the job will get done. While walking the halls and seeing Dan in action in the Capitol as well as out, I've learned that he is very thorough. He is a person that we are able to depend on, and for this we thank him.

I'd like to congratulate Senator Dan Ahlers for recently being named to the 2010 Champion for Children Honor Roll. Senator Ahlers' commitment to the well-being of South Dakota's children is evident not only for what he did to earn this award, but also for his efforts to save a state program that helped families reunite and heal after Child Protective Services and the Department of Social Services become involved because of neglect, etc.
Staff from Volunteers of America, through a state grant, administered court-ordered supervision of families. This program resulted in a nearly 90 percent success rate in long-term family reunification. This program was targeted to be cut from the state budget. As a member of the Appropriations Committee, he attempted through an amendment to SB196, to save this very important program. This amendment failed because no one but Senator Ahlers took the time to understand that this program helped kids and their families in need and saved the state literally hundreds of thousands of dollars. He understood the cost savings when so many of his colleagues used knee-jerk reactions in fixing the budget.
The state may have saved money for the next fiscal year, but we will end up spending so much more in the coming years because positive re-unifications will no longer happen as often. This results in more children spending more time in foster care as well as the proven negative ramifications of a childhood spend in and out of an unhappy home.
Thank you, Senator Ahlers, for standing up for South Dakota's children as well as your forward thinking in trying to save South Dakota money and creating an even better place to live.

I've known Dan Ahlers for almost a decade now. During that time, he has shown himself to be a caring and committed member of the Dell Rapids community.
Since his first election as our representative, he has significantly expanded the scope of his activities, both geographically and in terms of the issues he has addressed. I have been struck especially by the tenacity with which he has stood up for issues of education and children's safety, and I have no doubt that he will champion similar causes in the future.

Dan Ahlers is a legislator who has earned respect from his peers. He is not agenda or issue driven. It is easy to see Dan is interested in making the right decisions for his constituents.
Dan Ahlers is one of the most knowledgeable legislators I have met in Pierre. He is well read on the issues and makes good decisions after hearing both sides of the isle. That enables him to represent his constituents in a professional manner when and where it counts.
Dan Ahlers has proven himself in Pierre. He has sponsored, co-signed, and testified on bills in the House and Senate. He is well liked on both sides of the isle, and he is a knowledgeable representative for his district.
